[DECOMENT] The "High and Wide" Rule: How to make your windows look twice as big
Share
Why do my ceilings feel so low? It might be your curtain rod.
Most people hang their curtain rods directly on the window frame. This "cuts" the wall in half and makes your room feel smaller. The secret to a grand, designer look is to ignore the window frame and aim for the ceiling.
At DECOMENT, we suggest the "High and Wide" technique. By hanging your rod closer to the ceiling, you draw the eye upward, creating an illusion of height that can make an 8-foot ceiling feel like 10 feet.
The "Grand Window" Guide:
-
Go High: Place your curtain rod 4 to 6 inches above the window frame, or even higher—halfway between the frame and the ceiling.
-
Go Wide: Extend the rod 6 to 10 inches past the sides of the window. This allows the fabric to cover the wall, not the glass, making the window look much wider.
-
The Floor Kiss: Ensure your curtains are long enough to just touch the floor or hover 0.5 inches above it. Anything shorter (like "high-water" pants) breaks the visual flow.
| Placement Style | Visual Impact | Ceiling Feel |
| On Frame | Small / Closed | Low |
| 4" Above Frame | Balanced | Standard |
| Near Ceiling | Spacious / Luxury | High |
Use Case: For apartment dwellers with standard ceilings. Moving your curtain rod 6 inches higher and extending it 8 inches wider will instantly transform a cramped living room into a sophisticated, airy space without any renovation.
